Fibromyalgia is a medical condition characterized by widespread pain in the muscles on touch (pressure) and movement. It is long-term in nature and very difficult to properly diagnose and treat. Fibromyalgia is often associated with chronic fatigue syndrome and joint stiffness.
Depression is also associated with fibromyalgia. There is no cure for fibromyalgia at this time, but symptoms may be helped by medications, nutrition, lifestyle changes, exercise, and chiropractic and massage treatments.
There is evidence that genetics may play a role in developing fibromyalgia. Neck trauma and stress have been linked to an increased risk in developing fibromyalgia.
One theory describing fibromyalgia is explained by the lack of oxygenated blood reaching the muscle fibers. Muscle fatigue, soreness and loss of strength are the result. Many people with fibromyalgia compare the symtoms to running a marathon.
Chiropractic treatments have been very helpful in treating the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Very gentle adjustments along with therapies (ultrasound therapy, e-stim, massage, heat therapy) to aid in removing lactic acid buildup in the muscle fibers.
