Headaches can be caused by many different means. Chemical exposure, muscle spasms, stress, hormones, trauma, migraines, diseases, and many more can cause headaches. Chiropractic has had a lot of success treating headaches because many causes of headaches are the result of tight muscles (spasms) at the base of the skull and upper neck (cervical spine) causing mis-aligned vertebrae (subluxations). Even after the muscle spasms are reduced, the vertebrae may have become mis-aligned (subluxated) causing pressure and often times leading to chronic headaches or migraines. The vertebrae in the neck (cervical spine) only weigh 2 oz. and move very easily. When the muscles that attach to the vertebrae are spastic it can mis-alignments in the spine.

Chiropractors are the only doctors trained to locate (trough palpating/feeling, motion studies, and x-rays if necessary) and correct spinal mis-alignments (subluxations). Many times it can take several visits to reduce the muscle spasms and correct the subluxated vertebrae. Once the subluxation is removed it is important to do home stretches to reduce future muscle spasms. Periodic chiropractic treatments may also be necessary to prevent future spasms and mis-alignments.

Headaches usually start out as upper neck stiffness and tightness. If untreated, the muscles can spasm causing compression or mis-alignment of the spine, leading to a headache or migraine. If you suffer from headaches, migraines, neck pain, stiffness or tightness do not let it go. Call today to schedule a chiropractic exam at one of our two York, PA offices.
